Materials are those substances that have been used by human being, and regarded as the milestones of human history since the dawn of civilization. In prehistoric time, stones, straws and leathers supported the primitive life of mankind. Nowadays, the modern society that we are so dependent on, are established on the basis of such materials as metals, ceramics polymers and other new materials. The renovation in materials always leads to a remarkable progress in technology which has become the driving force of economy and society.
The School of Materials Science and Engineering was founded as The Department of Metal Hot-forming in 1985, but the first students enrolled in 1978. The School is currently fully integrated educations on metals, inorganic non-metallic materials, polymers, powder materials and materials processing and is able to expose our future professional engineers to design of novel materials or processing, innovation of product technology and improvement in material applications. Material engineers graduating from our School are, therefore, able to feel at home and make a meaningful contribution to manufacturing industry or R & D institutions in China and even abroad. There are currently 7 departments in the School:
l Department of Foundry Engineering
l Department of Plastic Forming and Molding
l Department of Welding Technology and Engineering
l Department of Metallic Materials Engineering
l Department of Polymer Materials and Engineering
l Department of Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering
l Department of Powder Material Science and Engineering
The school currently has 89 staffs, including 26 professors, 54 associate professors and senior engineers, among whom there are 2 doctoral supervisors and 42 master student supervisors. There are over 1300 undergraduates and 210 post-graduates in the School which offers 5 majors for full-time undergraduates:
l Materials Forming and Control Engineering (including the programs separately on casting, welding and molding of metals)
l Metallic Materials Engineering
l Polymer Materials and Engineering
l Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering
l Powder Materials Science and Engineering
It is understandable that graduates from our School are well sought-after by industry with many of them continuing after graduation with specialization in post graduate studies. The School also hosts a strong and vibrant post-graduate research program that offers Masters and PhD degrees. The School's research program is focused on actual industrial problems and fundamental problems from the national or local governments. The research interests cover a wide range from metals and alloys, inorganic non-metallic materials, polymers and composites to nano-structured materials and other functional materials. The following are the outlined research fields involved:
l casting, welding and forming of metals, e.g. magnesium or aluminum alloys
l novel green construction materials
l advanced surface technology of metallic materials, e.g. high energy beam and plasma surface processing
l porous materials, high entropy alloys, super-alloys, strengthening and toughening of materials
l environment-friendly heat insulating material
l microstructure and properties of inorganic non-metallic materials and polymers
l advanced materials for batteries
l preparation and processing of powder materials, e.g. mineral powder, graphite or materials of 3D printing
To support all of research activities in the above fields, the School has established state- or province-owned platforms for research and education:
l Sino-Russian Scientific & Technological Cooperation Base, Ministry of Science and Technology of China
l Liaoning Province Key Laboratory of Advanced Metallic Materials & Processing
l Representative Teaching Centre of Materials Processing and Performance Testing, Liaoning Province Department of Education
l Engineering Practice and Education Base for College Students of Liaoning Province
l Liaoning Province Key Laboratory of Novel Materials for Wall-Building
l Liaoning Province R & D Center of Surface Technology of Metallic Materials
l Liaoning Province Major R & D Center for Modern Ordnance & Equipment Technology (partly)
The high level teaching and research programs in the School are mutually supportive in that outstanding teaching leads to high level research while the outstanding research, in turn, leads to excellent teaching. Therefore, the discipline, Material Science and Engineering which has the right of Master granting, is honored as both The Outstanding Discipline by Liaoning Province government and The National Defense Characteristic Discipline by National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau,
